Part 1: Pre-movie ramble
TRANSCRIPT
All right, today's the day. Uh.. Today's the day I'm gonna watch the angry video game nerd movie. Now, I haven't seen it, but I've heard a lot about it. And for what little I've seen of it, it looks to be the cringest movie that's ever existed. No, I'm not gonna... I'm not gonna try and shit all over it. Like, most people have taken their shots at it, making their opportunity, trying to make a name himself off of James Rolf and the brand. Um, first and foremost, um, he's nostalgic to me. Okay? He, um, he brought forth for a small generation, um, a time that he grew up in, and people similar to his age, grew up, and they rekindled the joy, and the nostalgia and the fascination with, uh, what constituted game design, what constituted fun. Um, the circumstances around, um, that there's no internet. that you could view games, you basically had to go by word of mouth, uh, any game, video game TV, TV shows and magazines, or just on the cover, or back copy.? That's all you had to go on. So, a lot of times, you end up playing stuff, those, like, you know, it's, there's mechanics that get strung together, whether it's a platformer, or a puzzle game, or a PG, um, shooter, you know, um, there was a lot of low hanging fruit. There was a lot of little hanging fruit growing up, right? Because it morphed, there was so calm, there was so simple, the games were so simple. It was down in mechanics. And the mechanics were addictive enough that, um, you could keep track of your gameplay through high scores. And that's how you would compete with each other. And as time wore on, more of a narrative based, um, gameplay, uh, started to take root, especially with RPGs and uh, see, like, ninja guidance, with the cutscenes, the tower in the story, in between uh, game stages and, um, Now we're into the era of simulations where there is no real concept of game over. It's not really a point, it's the point of having a high score. You know, it's really not something that I'm interested in. You know, I think dabbling into it back in the late 90s. Right? 1st person shooters and stuff like that and more wind, all the squirrels, more wind, oblivion. You know, I kind of, through the tail end of the seventh generation. Then I just kind of spilled off the edge, but James Rolf's character, the angry video game nerd, I was there from almost the beginning. Um, and I just really enjoyed it. You know, I really brought some... It testified, for me, why my upbringing was so memorable, and is worth rememory, and worth sharing. So that said, I also want to preface something before I watch this movie. My view of him is gonna change. Okay? My views of him are gonna change. Whatever, whatever I've concocted, whatever, I've accumulated in memories of this person, of this artist, of this critic, uh, is gonna change forever after I watch this movie. And I'm going to sit through it like a warrior. Okay? I'm gonna sit through it, watch the whole thing. as a supporter. Uh, this, talking a lot of effort and a lot of money. You got to think of the pressure, right? You got to think of the pressure, you got to think of the fandom, that he was placating too, you know, someone donated to me, if, Hundreds of thousands of people donated $270,000 to me to make a book. That's a lot of pressure, right? You gotta make a good book that's gonna please everyone that donated to you. Okay, so and James' case, they were from, they were fans of his work. They were fans of his work, so he had the crate something, that appeased the fans, that donated them. For me, I have a book, I have a book. My 1st book here, deceased. That was my first book, and that was right after psychosis, I started writing that almost. But a month after, one or two months after, I got psychosis, I started, uh, that journey towards rain, the manuscript for my 1st book. Now... General rule of thumb is, you don't publish your 1st book, because it's more likely gonna be not good. I decided not to... I decided not to, uh, to ignore that because, you know, it's, everything's fresh in my head, and, you know, you gotta start somewhere, right? Think about it. If you, if, if so long as you make, so long as you make more than one film or make more than one book, um, you can see the progress, right? You grow. And yeah, it might be cringy. Yeah, it might be bad. But you see, you see people can see how much you've grown. Right? So, for example, if I had stopped, when I had to get my book professionally reviewed, I paid $700 for it. And I got a 2 out of 5 and that really fucking broke me a bit. Oh, fuck, two out of five? Really? And, uh, but the review, uh, was the written review, uh, didn't trash the book. It just kind of like helped to explain what the book was about. And I don't think it was necessarily negative. You wouldn't, I, based off the review, You think there's more like a 3 out of five, but, um, There were some things that they highlighted that were like really thought provoking. But having Ray Reddit, after the fact, yes, definitely, it's more of a quotable book. It's more, it's like a book full of quotes. Because it's too abstract, right? I don't really know how to give you context unless you've had psychosis. And this is where I think I have one common ground with James, is that the audience is so small. So, had my audience, had I had, like, two, 3 million people that were bipolar, and they all donated to me, the equivalent of $230,000, Canadian city. Okay, whatever. And I decided I can go all of them, right? I gotta get the best publisher. I'm gonna get all the, I just fall out, just go all out, right? Trying to appease all these different people, but then I make a book for others. I make a book for others, whereas the books I make are testimony, it's about me. Right? So... Probably, like, maybe, like, a dozen people bought my book. You're talking about hundreds of thousands of people have reviewed, bought, and reviewed the angry video game in their movie. Now, I was spared. The embarrassment, right? And very, you know, and what little fanfare maybe would have been available to me, had the book released to a wide, broad audience, right? And especially the people who are not bipolar, who will not get it, people that would give a two out of five, or one, or zero. So... Critics are failed artists, okay? So, It's, it's, If your goal is to become successful. Right? By being an artist, you really have to, you really have to, um, be successful. financially successful, okay? I have, have a wide, a wide audience praise your work. It's a tough gig, you know? So, I can say to this day, I, I didn't start. I didn't stop at the 1st book. When I got that 2 out of 5, it didn't phase me because you see right here, I published 2 more. So there's diseased? I don't believe you. And, uh, culture of one, the mythology, the news. Okay? Those are the 3 books I published, but I've also, I've kept going reams and reams of books and websites and journals. And artefacts, artwork. I didn't stop, and that's, that's what I hope James is not doing. I hope he's not phoning in the rest of his life because because of the movie he made. Now, I can't even imagine the work that went into it. I really can't. Like, going across country to film in Los Angeles, you know, I, I, I only know what I've heard through the, the views that watched, and it's like, it's an incredible operation, right? And $2070,000, not a lot of money to make a movie in Los Angeles. You know? And I want to think that there's people around him that realize that this is not going to be a good movie. And I don't know if James really was in on that inside, had that inside as well. Or if he was diluted into, into believe in it was actually... Um, help him achieve success, and then this, uh, get his foot in the door for Hollywood. You know, I can tell you that, uh, I've had that level of delusion. And those have been dashed over and over again, you know, you have an ego, right? You have an ego. So what I want to say is, I don't want to be a hypocrite here. Okay? I've, I've, I've failed to be an artist. And, um, I just want to say that I want to look. When I watch this movie, I want to, I want to watch it as a fan. But as an artist and critic, I do want to, I do want to give constructive feedback. Like, if distractive feedback, and I don't know how willing I will be, given that I may, I'm probably not gonna, it's gonna be hard for me to watch. Just, like, it would be hard for someone to sit through my book. At least it's a movie, right? I could just fucking... At some points, I could, it'll roll on, and I don't necessarily have to pay attention if I, if I can't find myself. do that, but readings a different story, right? Reading, you can't read a book in 2 hours, especially something's dense and abstract as mind writing. Um, well, and without the context, if you, if you're not fully aware of the, of James World's work, um, a lot of the, of a lot of the references and, You're miss, you would be missing context otherwise as to why something would be funny, why something is in the film. You know, you're learning for the 1st time who James Rolf is through this character. And if you're not part of his audience, you're sort of, you're dumbfounded as to why this constitutes entertainment. Unless there's something, you know, you could find about it. So I'll try and do that. I'll try and get some like. I'll try to, I'll do my best. So anyways, um, this is it. This is pre, um, James Ross, angry video gamer movie. When you look at part two, that would be after I watched the movie and you're going to see a shift. Okay? So, here we go.
Part 2: Post-movie ramble
TRANSCRIPT
Okay. I just finished watching the movie. I'll tell you what's remarkable about it. It's not nearly as bad as it's been made out to be. And maybe... walking into the review... I was prepared to see something way worse than what it was. Um, have I seen worse? It's been a long time since I watched... It's interesting, I'll see, from this, outside the movie, it's interesting that, you know, in an ironic... karma that so a failed artist finds fame with criticism. of... video game developers that, one, they're similar guidelines as he was when he made his film. Did he want to make the film? he wanted to make? Probably not. But he had shareholders, essentially, through... through the nations of his fans. Right? Um.. So now, he has a product... out there that he sells to the state. Um, that... I don't know, it's just, it's not very remarkable in any way, shape, or form. You know? It's disappointing. I was hoping that it would be, like, a movie that would... would be great, because it's so bad, but it's not even that. It's just, um... If you've seen this stuff online on YouTube or back in the day on his website, it's... If you stick to his old stuff anyways, it's a better use of your time. This. I don't have anything to say about it. That's... that's the tragic thing about this review, is that I... Um, I don't have anything to say. I don't think it's worth seeing. I think if you're a mega fan of the Angry Radio Game Nerd, um... Have it, you know, I guess. Um... If you want to shit on the nerd, I mean... I don't know, I don't know what to make of it. It's... It's, um... I'll, I'll... look this way. It has to keep going. If I stopped after my first book, I would not be where I am today. Okay? I don't want this to be James Rolf last movie, but he needs to make a movie that speaks to him. Not for... fans are not friends. Okay? Make something for yourself, make a testimony. Okay? This is not testimony. Okay? Um... And don't start it. Directed. You're a filmmaker, right? You're not. Stand back from the camera, because... you're not... you're not a star in that type of way. Okay? You're not, you don't have a, you don't have a, the camera doesn't love you. Okay, the fans do. But to a general audience, okay? You don't cut it as an actor. But you might be able to cut it as a director. Okay? I don't know how much you've learned from this, but a whole demonstrated in something else that's not this. Okay? And solidarity, I want to show you where I'm leaving this the video. Okay. In the trash, symbolically, along with my first book, Diseased. Okay? Hey, we're filled artists, man. You found your fame and criticism, and now you, uh, you open up your art for criticism. All right? It's a fair game. It's fair game in this, in this, in this world of cynical people. I don't have anything else to say. It's... I don't know, if you're a, if you're a hardcore fan by the movie, have it in your collection, maybe it would be nostalgic. I don't know. I don't know. I got nothing to say. Anyways, my life didn't change. My life didn't change. I'm just gonna probably go read a book now. You can do some shopping. Uh, it's just an unremarkable movie. And, but, it's a learning experience, right? It's a learning experience. He owes it to himself. to make a movie that's more in line with what he's capable of. Okay? This was not going to, this was not his calling. This was not his foot in the door into Hollywood. It was not. Uh... He just wasn't. And it's a bitter pills swallow. But if you look at it objectively, uh, it was never meant to be, that. Hopefully you learn from it. I encourage you to keep, make something, make something that is, that you can be proud of, at least. Make something that you're proud of. And if you're proud of this, God bless you, I guess. Um, I don't like the movie. It's a two out of five.
