I consider myself a centrist. My definition is that alignment with a political spectrum is caveman-esque tribalism. I don't adopt unilateral opinions on anything based on a groupings, to me that's idiotic.

I believe that the political spectrum is fundamentally rooted in empathy and that's how people classify themselves unwittingly. I'll explain with extreme examples:

Those that have no empathy are right extremists, and see the world through an "I" lens. To this group, others are not deserving of their self centered sympathies.

Those that are left extremists satisfy a feeling of superiority only when they themselves suffer for "THE OTHER". They earn satisfaction by taking away instead of building up.

These are extremes, which obviously, people fall within.

However, I think both sides can claim the other is ignorant:

Leftists are ignorant to their own self harm. They view it as noble, others view it as foolish.

Righties are ignorant to the suffering of others. They are incapable of transposing themselves into the eyes of someone they intrinsically feel 'better than' and so are viewed as cold and self centered.
